A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court, urging the Union of India to create a robust regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, particularly concerning deepfakes—AI-generated images, videos, and audio. The petition, initiated by Aarati Sah, demands that tech giants like Meta Platforms and Google implement effective grievance-redressal mechanisms for promptly removing content that impersonates individuals. It also called for the formation of an Expert Committee to recommend ethical AI standards. The plea highlights that unregulated AI usage has led to privacy violations, affecting both citizens and public figures, as well as resulting in a surge of litigation in high courts. Citing global models from the EU, US, and others, the petition emphasizes the lack of safeguards in India, urging for a comprehensive national regime to protect fundamental rights under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.
