A recent study analyzing health records from over 130,000 adults with insomnia highlights the potential risks associated with long-term melatonin use. The research found that those using melatonin for more than a year had a 90% increased likelihood of developing heart failure and were nearly 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for the condition compared to non-users. Furthermore, melatonin users had a mortality rate of 7.8%, significantly higher than the 4.3% observed in the non-melatonin group. While melatonin is often marketed as a safe sleep aid, researchers are urging caution due to these concerning findings. Dr. Ekenedilichukwu Nnadi emphasized the need for further investigation into melatonin’s long-term cardiovascular safety. These results could prompt a reassessment of how healthcare providers recommend sleep aids, especially in light of current practices. Awareness is crucial for patients considering chronic melatonin supplements. The findings will be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025.
