Punjab and Haryana HC bars judicial officers from using AI tools for judgments, research

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has prohibited judicial officers from using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI for writing judgments or conducting legal research. A formal directive warns that violations will be taken seriously. This decision, targeting district and sessions judges in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, aligns with a similar move by the Gujarat High Court, which restricts AI in adjudication while allowing limited support usage. The Gujarat court emphasized that AI should enhance justice delivery without replacing judicial reasoning. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, recent speaker at a legal conference, highlighted the systemic risks of premature AI integration in judicial processes, stressing the legal framework is not ready for AI’s direct involvement. The administrative directive reflects a cautious approach, recognizing the potential benefits of technology while safeguarding the integrity of judicial decision-making from unregulated AI influence.
