Punjab and Haryana High Court Prohibits Use of AI Tools Such as ChatGPT for Legal Decisions and Research

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has prohibited judicial officers from using AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot for writing judgments and conducting legal research. A letter from the registrar-general emphasized that all district and sessions judges in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh must instruct their staff against using such technologies. Violations of this directive will be taken seriously. This decision echoes a similar stance by the Gujarat High Court, which forbade AI in judicial decision-making processes, such as order drafting and bail considerations. The Gujarat High Court’s AI policy aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of justice delivery, rather than substituting human judicial reasoning with artificial intelligence. These measures reflect a cautious approach to integrating technology within the judiciary, ensuring that human judgment remains paramount in legal proceedings.
