Quill.org, a nonprofit offering AI-supported writing tools to millions of students, has partnered with Leanlab Education and Learning Commons on a $2.8 million initiative. This project aims to evaluate the alignment of AI-generated literacy content with established classroom standards. Quill’s CEO, Peter Gault, highlighted the uneven quality of AI tools for schools, emphasizing the need for rigorous evaluation to enhance educational effectiveness. The collaboration will create public datasets, assessment protocols, and evaluators to measure AI feedback and reading materials against trusted rubrics. Sandra Liu Huang, President of Learning Commons, stressed that teachers require reliable tools that deliver quality content tailored to students’ needs. The project includes developing a research protocol for a large dataset of anonymized student writing to refine feedback practices. By making all produced resources publicly available, the initiative seeks to address challenges in writing feedback and reading material suitability, ultimately enhancing the education experience.
