Reconsidering AI: Was It Ever Just a Tool?

Maybe AI Was Never a Tool

Unlike traditional tools like hammers and calculators, artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) engage us in a unique, iterative cognitive process. They are not mere tools; instead, they create a “synthetic language-space” that reshapes our thoughts and ideas. This interaction transforms external utility into internal participation, fundamentally altering our reasoning and cognitive landscape. While traditional tools inflict visible harm, AI influences our minds subtly and insidiously, leading to what I call “anti-intelligence”—a form of counterfeit cognition that bypasses the necessary struggles of human thought. This results in conclusions that feel complete but lack the authentic insights developed through confusion and error. Over-integration of AI can obscure the lines between human and machine-generated ideas, raising concerns about the risk of losing our cognitive autonomy. As we navigate this new terrain, we must stay vigilant and aware of how AI shapes our thinking and the implications for innovation and understanding.
