A recent report from the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) reveals that Korea’s move towards expanding digital learning in schools may exacerbate educational inequalities. The study highlights that high-performing students and those from wealthier families often display superior digital skills, reinforcing the “rich get richer, poor get poorer” trend in education. KEDI’s 2023 survey showed that students from affluent backgrounds performed better in digital competencies, indicating a correlation between digital literacy and socioeconomic status. The report warns that if educational institutions do not address these disparities, the digital divide could deepen, impacting critical skills like reasoning and problem-solving. KEDI advocates for curriculum restructuring that embraces multiple forms of literacy and a school model that prepares students for the digital age. The agency stresses that effective digital education should foster independent thinking and expression, going beyond mere access to technology.
