Researchers Use Drones, AI Tools to Study Turkey Behavior

As the holiday season approaches, turkey growers face challenges from labor shortages and rising costs, making it difficult to maintain affordable prices for families. A recent study by Pennsylvania State University highlights how drones and artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance turkey farming. By utilizing DJI Neo drones equipped with high-quality cameras, researchers monitored turkey behavior, capturing over 19,000 activities. This data helps identify issues early, such as mortality rates, ensuring flock health and welfare.

The YOLO computer-vision model used provided accurate behavioral detection, crucial for improving operational efficiency. Researchers observed that drones’ effects on turkeys were minimal when operated smoothly, allowing birds to adapt quickly. With a labor turnover rate of 60% in agriculture, this technology offers a solution by reducing repetitive monitoring tasks for workers. Overall, drone and AI integration in poultry farming can enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve animal welfare during a crucial consumer season.
