Dirk Groot, a former IT worker, collaborated with tech company Capgemini to create the innovative app Litterlens, designed to combat litter in Amsterdam. This user-friendly app allows locals to photograph litter, using AI to identify packaging material, its contents, and brands such as Coca-Cola and Heineken. Initially tested during the cleanup post-SAIL Amsterdam, Litterlens will undergo further trials during Amsterdam CleansDay on September 19. The app aims to gather crucial data to trace litter sources, enabling local authorities to hold polluters accountable, notably for single-use items from events and shops lacking deposit systems. Capgemini’s Luc Baardman highlights the app’s potential to provide actionable data, moving beyond subjective assessments. Groot envisions impactful discussions with companies, drawing from litter data, as seen in Purmerend, where effective strategies cut litter by half. By leveraging robust data, the initiative aspires to encourage companies to contribute financially to litter reduction efforts.
