'Universal' detector spots AI deepfake videos with record accuracy

A groundbreaking universal deepfake detector has achieved unprecedented accuracy, effectively recognizing a variety of AI-manipulated videos, including non-consensual pornography, political misinformation, and financial scams. Traditional deepfake detection models primarily focus on facial recognition, limiting their effectiveness. Developed by researchers, including Rohit Kundu from UC Riverside, this new model analyzes both faces and background elements, identifying subtle inconsistencies and signs of AI manipulation across diverse video types. It has registered accuracy rates between 95% and 99% for face-swapped videos and outperforms other detectors for completely synthetic video analysis. Presented at the 2025 IEEE Conference, this innovation could revolutionize how platforms like YouTube identify deepfakes, ensuring safer online environments. Future enhancements may allow real-time detection during live video calls, addressing growing concerns regarding the authenticity of online communications. As AI-generated content rises, effective detection systems are essential for countering misinformation and protecting user privacy.
