A groundbreaking AI tool, CytoDiffusion, is set to transform the diagnosis of blood disorders like leukemia. Developed by UK researchers, this system detects abnormal blood cells with superior accuracy, surpassing human specialists. Trained on over half a million blood smear images from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, it can analyze thousands of cells in seconds, identifying rare anomalies that clinicians might miss. Unlike traditional models, CytoDiffusion uses generative AI, making it adaptable to various hospitals and microscopy methods, and even estimates its own uncertainty—enhancing clinical decision-making.
By automating routine checks, CytoDiffusion alleviates clinician workloads and quickly flags urgent cases for review. The system performed slightly better than expert haematologists in tests, producing realistic blood cell images indistinguishable from real ones, ultimately aiding healthcare professionals without replacing them. The project also features the release of a public dataset, promoting high-quality medical research. Further testing will ensure its effectiveness in diverse populations, paving the way for improved diagnostic accuracy.
