Hend Alqaderi, an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, explores how saliva analysis can predict diabetes risk and coronavirus severity. Initially challenged by analyzing vast bacteria samples, she discovered machine learning (AI) at a conference, prompting her to study AI at MIT and establish the Dental AI Lab at Tufts. This lab focuses on using AI to enhance dental patient care by improving scheduling, billing, and diagnostic processes. AI can analyze electronic dental records to predict conditions like cavities and oral cancer, akin to recommendation algorithms used by Netflix or Amazon. The lab aims to develop tools that integrate AI into dental practices, saving time and enhancing patient communication. Alqaderi also introduced the Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry course to equip students with essential AI knowledge, preparing them for its future applications in their clinics. The initiative strengthens research and education in dental AI, emphasizing collaboration between dental and data science fields.
