McKinsey & Company is revolutionizing its workforce by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) as a core operational component, boasting over 25,000 AI agents among its 60,000 employees. CEO Bob Sternfels highlighted the firm’s ambition to pair every human worker with at least one AI agent in the coming year and a half, marking a significant productivity initiative. This transition has seen a rapid rise in AI usage from just a few thousand agents in under two years, enhancing processes such as research, data analysis, and document drafting traditionally handled by junior consultants. The “25-squared” model aims to elevate client-facing roles while reducing non-client-based positions by 25%. Despite non-client workforce reduction, productivity increased by 10%, saving 1.5 million work hours last year. While AI boosts efficiency, Sternfels affirmed that human judgment, creativity, and strategic thinking remain irreplaceable.
