In a recent Orca AI webinar, industry leaders including Dor Raviv, co-founder of Orca AI, discussed the pressing issue of cognitive overload among seafarers, particularly in congested port areas. Raviv highlighted that 45% of EU marine incidents occur in these environments, largely due to human error stemming from information overload on the bridge. Data-driven AI-assisted navigation was presented as a solution to reduce bridge workload and enhance safety by efficiently managing radar feeds and AIS data. DNV’s Pierre Sames noted that while overall maritime casualties have increased, navigation-related incidents have remained stable, emphasizing the necessity of documenting AI technology’s safety contributions. Captain Denis Dude shared insights on how AI navigation systems improve situational awareness and training. Both Captain Gaurav Kapoor and other owners stressed the urgency for shipowners to take responsibility for navigational safety, advocating for enhanced use of technology to streamline operations in an increasingly complex maritime landscape.
