RNZ is enhancing its social media comment moderation with the introduction of Sence, an AI-powered tool from a New Zealand-based company. With over 850,000 followers and significant monthly engagement, effective monitoring of comments for harmful content is crucial for RNZ. Sence will help identify and categorize hate speech, spam, and threats, aligning with RNZ’s Charter and Harmful Communications policy. The tool allows comments to be hidden rather than deleted, ensuring oversight by RNZ staff and adherence to AI Principles. RNZ Interim Head of Content, John Hartevelt, emphasized that this partnership fosters respectful public debate and reduces staff exposure to harmful communication. The tool goes live on RNZ’s social media from September 18, following a training period. It’s designed to navigate the digital landscape while respecting community guidelines. RNZ will update its policies accordingly, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining constructive online engagement.
