Conservative influencer Robby Starbuck has filed a defamation lawsuit against Google, alleging that its AI chatbot inaccurately linked him to a sexual assault allegation and controversial white nationalist Richard Spencer. The lawsuit, presented in Delaware Superior Court, seeks over $15 million in damages. Starbuck claims the AI tools, including Gemma and Gemini, falsely accused him of participating in the January 6 Capitol riots and spreading fraudulent allegations. Google responded, acknowledging the issue of “hallucinations” in AI outputs, which can lead to misleading information. Starbuck argues that, despite Google’s awareness of the inaccuracies for over two years, no corrective action was taken, calling for transparent and unbiased AI solutions. He aims to restore his reputation and ensure AI serves truth. Having previously influenced major companies to roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Starbuck now positions himself as a leading figure in the conservative movement against such policies in corporate America.
