Google's AI, Gemini, is 'high risk' for kids and teens, safety report finds

A recent safety report by Common Sense Media raises serious concerns about Google Gemini, an AI tool deemed a “high risk” for children and teens. Despite having “Under 13” and “Teen Experience” settings, Gemini can still expose young users to inappropriate content related to sex, drugs, and unsafe mental health advice. The report criticizes these features as modified rather than specifically designed for younger audiences, highlighting a lack of effective filtering. Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs, emphasizes the need for AI tools to cater to children’s developmental stages instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. Common Sense Media recommends that children under five should avoid chatbots entirely, while those aged 6-12 need close supervision. Furthermore, experts warn that other AI platforms, such as Character.AI, also pose safety risks. Parents are advised to monitor AI usage to ensure children’s safety online.
