OpenAI is shifting its approach to copyright and intellectual property with the launch of its invite-only video app, Sora. Reports indicate that prior to the launch, OpenAI informed Hollywood studios that they must explicitly opt out if they don’t want their intellectual property (IP) used in generated content. Despite being invite-only, Sora topped App Store charts, particularly with its “cameos” feature that allows users to incorporate their digital likeness in AI videos. However, many users are creating videos featuring copyrighted characters, even portraying them in humorous contexts while critiquing copyright practices. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced plans for an “opt-in” model, allowing rights holders more control over character usage. Additionally, the app is exploring monetization options, potentially sharing revenue with copyright owners. Altman emphasized that Sora aims to create valuable interactions while respecting IP rights.
