Sam Altman: Bots are Creating a ‘Fake’ Experience on Social Media

Sam Altman, a Reddit stakeholder and OpenAI CEO, recently highlighted the growing difficulty in distinguishing human-generated social media content from that produced by bots. His realization came from reviewing posts in the r/Claudecode subreddit, where many purported OpenAI Codex users excessively praised the AI programming service. This led Altman to ponder the authenticity of these posts, suggesting that both human users and bots might be contributing. He noted various factors influencing this perception, including trends dominated by the “Extremely Online” crowd and engagement-driven social media algorithms. Although Altman accused the environment of seeming insincere, he admitted that evidence of astroturfing (artificially inflated support) remains circumstantial. As LLMs become increasingly adept at mimicking human speech, the line between genuine and bot-generated content blurs. Altman’s insights raise questions about the authenticity of online interactions, especially in light of potential plans for OpenAI’s own social media platform.
