Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced a significant update for ChatGPT: users can now instruct the chatbot to avoid using em dashes, a common aspect of its writing style. In a recent post on X, Altman mentioned that this feature addresses user complaints about ChatGPT ignoring requests to eliminate this punctuation. Em dashes are typically used by writers for emphasis, surprise, or contrast, but some users previously felt hesitant to use them due to associations with AI-generated text. Altman termed this change a “small-but-happy win.” OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT’s customization, including “memory” features that allow the chatbot to retain specific user preferences for future interactions. Although the update specifically targets em dashes, no further changes regarding other identifiable phrases have been announced. This follows a trend of making ChatGPT more user-friendly while maintaining its versatility for creative writing.
