Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is in discussions for a £2 billion ($2.5 billion) proposal to provide free premium access to ChatGPT for UK residents. This potential deal was brought up during a meeting with UK technology secretary Peter Kyle, amid broader talks about AI collaboration. Although Kyle expressed skepticism about the proposal’s high cost, it reflects the UK government’s eagerness to advance the AI sector, despite concerns over technology’s accuracy, privacy, and copyright issues. Currently, OpenAI offers free and subscription-based services, with ChatGPT Plus priced at $20 per month. An OpenAI spokesperson noted the UK is among the top five markets for ChatGPT subscriptions, emphasizing efforts to democratize AI access. In July, Altman and the UK government signed a memorandum of understanding to explore AI applications across various public sectors. These collaborations aim to unlock economic opportunities and enhance services like education and healthcare.
