The Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is pioneering the Science Context Protocol (SCP), an open-source standard designed to enhance AI-driven scientific research. Building on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), which became the industry benchmark for connecting AI models to external data sources, SCP addresses key limitations in existing research AI systems like A-Lab, ChemCrow, and Coscientist. By creating a centralized hub for seamless interaction among researchers, AI agents, and lab equipment, SCP facilitates multi-institution collaboration.
This protocol enriches experiment metadata, coordinates workflows, and integrates diverse lab devices through standardized drivers. SCP supports the entire experiment lifecycle—registration, planning, execution, and archiving—using a secure architecture. With over 1,600 interoperable tools across various scientific disciplines, SCP streamlines processes from protocol extraction to AI-driven drug screening. By enabling automated collaboration, the protocol aims to revolutionize scalable, multi-institution scientific endeavors, making research more efficient and reproducible.
