Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has paused the citywide implementation of Microsoft’s AI Copilot, diverging from her predecessor Bruce Harrell’s ambitious AI initiatives aimed at making Seattle a leader in responsible artificial intelligence. Under Harrell, copilot testing with 500 city employees demonstrated significant business value, with users saving an average of 2.5 hours weekly by utilizing the tool for tasks like document drafting and summarizing meeting notes. However, the Wilson administration is reevaluating the AI strategy to align with their priorities and ensure security and privacy compliance. While the broader rollout is halted, the initial testers can continue using Copilot. Seattle, which has formally adopted an AI policy requiring human oversight and restrictions on AI usage for sensitive tasks, remains engaged in educating staff on AI and conducting pilot programs with other tools. The IT department is also preparing quarterly reports on AI usage to enhance transparency and effectiveness in government operations.
