Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, has raised concerns about the Department of Defense (DoD) labeling AI startup Anthropic as a supply chain risk. In a recent letter addressed to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Warren suggested this move could be retaliatory, expressing fears that the DoD pressures companies to develop tools for surveillance and autonomous weapons without proper safeguards. The conflict in Iran has intensified scrutiny over the DoD’s contracts with tech firms, as Anthropic seeks clarity on the use of its technology in sensitive operations. Following a clash regarding access to its AI models, Anthropic was blacklisted, prompting a lawsuit against the Trump administration. Simultaneously, OpenAI secured a deal with the DoD, drawing skepticism over potential domestic surveillance. Warren has also reached out to OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, demanding transparency regarding contract terms, highlighting broad concerns about AI’s role in warfare and privacy.
