Senior European journalist suspended over AI-generated quotes | AI (artificial intelligence)

Peter Vandermeersch, a senior journalist for De Telegraaf and the Irish Independent, has been suspended after admitting to using AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s NotebookLM to incorrectly quote individuals. He acknowledged falling into the “trap of hallucinations,” a term describing AI-generated inaccuracies. Vandermeersch published misleading summaries in his Substack newsletter, citing dozens of false quotes, which were flagged by an internal investigation from Mediahuis’s NRC. He expressed regret for failing to verify the quotes, stating he was aware of the risks yet succumbed to the allure of AI-generated content. Mediahuis CEO Gert Ysebaert emphasized the organization’s commitment to reliable journalism and the necessity of human oversight with AI usage. Vandermeersch’s articles have since been removed, and he reflected on the importance of maintaining the integrity of journalism, recognizing AI’s potential but stressing it should not replace human diligence.
