OpenAI and SoftBank Group have committed $1 billion to SB Energy for developing next-generation AI data centers in the U.S., part of the Stargate Project announced in January 2025. This investment aims to enhance data center and energy infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for AI computing power, considered crucial for future economic growth. SB Energy will construct and manage a 1.2GW data center in Milam County, Texas, serving as a vital part of OpenAI’s infrastructure plans. The partnership combines OpenAI’s expertise in data center engineering with SB Energy’s project execution capabilities. As part of its strategy, SB Energy is also focusing on operational efficiency and sustainability by reducing water usage at the facility. Additionally, SB Energy will integrate OpenAI products internally and has previously secured $800 million in funding to support growth. This collaboration is expected to generate significant employment during construction and substantially impact the region’s economy.
