Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, are at the center of a significant financial milestone. SoftBank has fulfilled its remarkable $40 billion investment commitment to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Reports from CNBC indicate that the last tranche of this investment—valued between $22 billion and $22.5 billion—was completed recently, bringing SoftBank’s total ownership in OpenAI to over 10%. This massive capital injection values OpenAI at a pre-money valuation of $260 billion and supports Project Stargate, a major AI infrastructure initiative with Oracle. To fund this venture, SoftBank sold its entire $5.8 billion stake in Nvidia and offloaded shares in T-Mobile for $9.17 billion. Despite not wanting to sell Nvidia shares, Son expressed a need for funding OpenAI initiatives, emphasizing the strategic nature of these investment moves. SoftBank also bolstered its AI assets by acquiring DigitalBridge for $4 billion.
