South Korea’s prosecution service is advancing the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline investigations and trial preparations. Initiated in 2023, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office has begun integrating AI tools to assist in drafting indictments, analyzing case issues, and summarizing extensive case files. Following a pilot program by the courts, this initiative is set to fully implement AI into the Criminal Justice Information System by 2027, with enhancements planned for 2028. To safeguard privacy and data security, these AI models will operate on a secure internal network rather than on external cloud platforms. Additionally, the prosecution service has already deployed an AI-based tool within its case management system to recommend similar case investigation documents. This development aims to improve transparency, bolster public trust, and expedite criminal proceedings. The Supreme Court is also testing a generative AI system to assist in judicial data analysis and case management.
