Spotify recently announced partnerships with major record labels, including Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin, to develop AI products aimed at fair artist compensation and respectful use of copyright. The initiative focuses on creating “responsible AI” tools that allow artists and songwriters to opt-in for AI usage, addressing concerns raised by the rise of AI-generated music.

Spotify has already integrated generative AI features, such as an AI DJ and playlist creation tools, but faced criticism over the viral success of AI-generated bands, prompting a policy overhauling to combat spam related to AI content.

The new labeling system, DDEX, will clarify when AI is involved in music creation, ensuring transparency and compensation for artists. The company reinforces its commitment to maintaining copyright, stating that musicians’ rights are paramount. Moreover, Spotify is setting up a generative AI research lab to further develop technologies that respect artists’ choices in the evolving music landscape.
