On a sunny March morning, teachers at Percy Julian Middle School in Oak Park, Illinois, gathered for an insightful meeting on artificial intelligence (AI) led by nine 8th graders. These students, under the guidance of social studies teacher Ashley Kannan, explored AI’s transformative potential in education and how to navigate its ethical considerations. The student presenters emphasized the importance of AI literacy, stating that their generation will interact with this technology deeply, including in college applications. The initiative aimed to involve students in discussions traditionally held by educators, shifting focus towards their needs and perspectives. While many students initially viewed AI with skepticism, their experiences led to a newfound understanding of its benefits and limitations. They highlighted that while AI can enhance learning, it cannot replace the unique value that human teachers provide. This project represents a progressive step towards integrating AI responsibly in educational settings.
