The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life raises significant concerns about its impact on critical thinking and cognitive development. Education experts emphasize that reliance on AI, particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, might inhibit essential problem-solving skills and intellectual growth among young users. A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that participants using ChatGPT exhibited the lowest levels of cognitive engagement and creativity, suggesting that the immediate answers provided by AI can replace valuable “productive struggle.” Experts argue that AI should serve as a supplement, not a substitute for human thinking. Overdependence may lead to cognitive laziness and reinforce biases. Further, inadequate foundational knowledge can result in severe consequences, especially in critical fields like healthcare and engineering. To maximize learning efficacy, AI should be seen as a collaborative partner, fostering deeper engagement and ensuring a solid grasp of core knowledge before seeking AI assistance.
