A recent study highlighted by Wired claims that large language models (LLMs) have a mathematical limitation regarding their ability to perform complex computational and agentic tasks. Authored by Vishal and Varin Sikka, the paper argues that LLMs encounter significant challenges due to their architecture, limiting their reliability for high-stakes applications like managing nuclear power plants. Despite tech industry claims of AI’s capabilities, even OpenAI’s team acknowledges issues such as “AI hallucinations,” where models inaccurately fabricate information. While there are efforts to create external guardrails to mitigate these hallucinations, the study suggests LLMs inherently struggle with complexity. Vishal Sikka concedes that, although these models have fundamental flaws, developing supplementary components could enhance their functionality. This research underscores the necessity for realistic expectations regarding AI’s potential, challenging the inflated promises often made by tech executives about autonomous AI agents.
