A study from MIT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory reveals that current AI systems can perform tasks linked to approximately 11.7% of total U.S. wage value, equating to about $1.2 trillion across finance, healthcare, and professional services. This analysis, represented by the Iceberg Index, highlights the technical exposure of AI rather than job loss. By mapping AI capabilities against worker skills—using data from over 32,000 skills and 923 occupations—the researchers provide insight into skill overlap that traditional workforce data lacks. A component known as the Surface Index focuses on visible AI adoption, covering about 2.2% of wage value, mostly in tech roles. The Iceberg Index reveals a broader landscape, indicating significant exposure in administrative and financial jobs, regardless of local tech sectors. Early implementations of the index in states like Tennessee and North Carolina show potential for enhancing workforce strategies to better align with AI capabilities. This study underscores the necessity for adaptive workforce planning in an evolving economy.
