Recent research from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC highlights serious concerns regarding the reliability of AI news assistants. The study analyzed 3,000 responses from popular AI software, revealing that nearly 50% misrepresented news, raising issues of trust and accuracy crucial for democratic engagement. With more young consumers turning to AI for news, this report calls for improved accountability from technology companies. Notably, Google’s Gemini assistant had a staggering 72% sourcing error rate, while overall 45% of responses had significant issues. The study also flagged inaccuracies in 20% of replies, including outdated information. As AI becomes a common news source, ensuring these platforms deliver accurate, well-sourced information is imperative. EBU officials stressed the need for trust, stating that uncertainty can deter democratic participation. As AI assistants grow in use, there is an urgent need for improvements in their response quality and factual accuracy.
