MPs in Northern Lincolnshire are advocating for the region to become an artificial intelligence (AI) growth zone, potentially creating one of Europe’s largest AI data centre clusters. This initiative is projected to attract over £20 billion in private investment and generate 15,650 jobs by 2029, with significant backing from local MPs, including Melanie Onn. The Northern Lincolnshire AI Growth Zone (NLAIGZ), led by North Lincolnshire Council and developer Greystoke, aims to deliver 2.5GW of compute capacity, nearly doubling London’s offering. However, concerns regarding flooding and water supply have emerged related to the proposed site at Elsham Wolds. Despite these concerns, the project promises to harness local steel production and align with the offshore wind and carbon capture industries. This aligns with the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan to enhance economic growth and community development through strategic AI investments. Further site announcements are anticipated as the project progresses.
