Employees from Alphabet’s Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and OpenAI are expressing concern over the companies’ collaboration with the Pentagon on AI technology. Over 100 Google staff signed a letter urging management to implement “red lines” for government contracts, highlighting risks associated with the potential military use of Google’s Gemini AI for domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. This letter, directed to Jeff Dean of Google DeepMind, cites his support for Anthropic’s stance against military surveillance. Concurrently, another group of employees issued an open letter titled “We Will Not Be Divided,” criticizing Pentagon negotiation strategies and urging resistance to the Department of War’s demands. In response, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the military has no intention of using AI for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry. Employees are also advocating for enhanced transparency, worker safety measures, and an all-hands meeting to address these concerns.
