Kevin Tang, a 13-year-old innovator, created FallGuard, an AI-driven device designed to help detect falls among older adults. Inspired by personal experiences with his grandmother’s fall, Tang’s project aims to address the alarming statistics of elder fall incidents. FallGuard, awarded first prize at the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge, uses a camera system to monitor individuals’ movements. It sends real-time alerts to family phones without relying on cellular networks, ensuring privacy by not recording video. The AI utilizes a two-stage fall detection algorithm to differentiate falls from intentional lying down by analyzing posture changes. Tang has been actively refining the device, aiming to support multiple cameras and improve reliability. His invention has generated interest from around 500 families, including those with unique needs, enhancing their quality of life. With a prize of $25,000, Tang reinvested in the project, proudly reflecting on its evolution from inception to a fully functional product.
