In a significant step towards China-US collaboration in advanced technology, Tencent Holdings’ cloud division has partnered with San Francisco-based start-up Cartesia to create next-generation voice artificial intelligence applications. The announcement on Tuesday revealed the strategic partnership, following Cartesia’s recent $100 million funding for its innovative text-to-speech model, Sonic 3. By integrating Tencent’s global real-time communication infrastructure with Cartesia’s advanced technology, the collaboration aims to enable machines to communicate fluently in over 40 languages with human-like quality. This partnership focuses on delivering seamless AI voice solutions for diverse markets, particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa. The alliance emerges amid increasing mistrust between AI firms from China and the US. Founded in September 2023 by alumni of Stanford’s AI Lab, Cartesia utilizes a novel architecture called State Space Models, distinguishing itself from prevalent frameworks like Google’s Transformer. This innovative approach positions both companies at the forefront of voice AI technology.
