Tencent has appointed former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu as its chief AI scientist amid a significant overhaul of its AI operations. Yao will lead the newly established AI Infrastructure Department, reporting directly to Tencent president Martin Lau. This department is part of the Technology Engineering Group (TEG) and focuses on large-model training and machine learning services, responding to mounting sector competition.
Yao, who has a strong background from his previous roles at Google, Microsoft, and Princeton University, joins Tencent after a two-year tenure at OpenAI. He is also responsible for TEG’s large language model development. As part of the AI reorganization, Tencent has dissolved its Machine Learning Platform and renamed its data platform team, redistributing staff to better facilitate model training and deployment. With increasing global competition for AI talent, Tencent aims to strengthen its Hunyuan model family by recruiting more top AI researchers.
