The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has established an internal artificial intelligence (AI) policy to effectively manage emerging technologies within its workforce. The policy aims to enhance productivity and efficiency while ensuring compliance with state IT security and privacy regulations. It emphasizes the use of generative AI tools, such as chatbots and image generators, for tasks like document drafting and code assistance, under strict approval protocols. The IT Division oversees the management of this policy, maintaining an approved tools list and scrutinizing high-risk applications. Prohibited uses include legal interpretations and handling confidential data without authorization. Additionally, the policy stresses the importance of training and user accountability, mandating staff to verify the accuracy of AI-generated outputs. This initiative aligns with the Texas Department of Information Resources’ proposed AI Code of Ethics, which emphasizes fairness, transparency, and accountability in government AI use. The policy became effective in November.
