Exploring the Economics of AI Risk: A Call for Serious Dialogue
As a professor of economics, my recent focus has been on the interplay between transformative AI and economic growth. Together with Klaus Prettner, we authored a pivotal paper titled “The Economics of p(doom): Scenarios of Existential Risk and Economic Growth in the Age of Transformative AI.” Our research sparked significant interest at conferences, although publishing it has proven challenging.
Key Insights:
- Theoretical discussions on AI risks face publishing barriers; empirical studies dominate.
 - Our paper highlights the critical notion that even a small probability of extinction justifies urgent investment in risk mitigation.
 - The AI community mustn’t shy away from existential risks simply because they are daunting.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s essential for the academic community to expand the dialogue on AI and its implications.
