Despite nearly three decades since the ’90s, gender parity in STEM, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), remains elusive. Currently, women comprise just 30% of the AI workforce, as reported by the 2023 Global Gender Gap report. This imbalance extends to AI usage, where only 27% of ChatGPT app downloads are by women. Such disparities raise concerns about bias in AI development and deployment, potentially alienating women users.
To address this, it’s crucial to better market STEM careers to girls. Early exposure can dispel misconceptions of STEM fields being isolating, showcasing their collaborative nature instead. Encouraging women to apply for jobs, even if they don’t meet every qualification, can expand their networks and opportunities.
Additionally, fostering mentorship and sponsor relationships is vital for women in STEM. As AI shapes our world, prioritizing diversity in its development will help ensure technology serves all users equitably, moving towards a more inclusive future.
