In March, I began mapping the OpenAI “Constellations,” spotlighting startups associated with OpenAI, particularly those founded by former employees. These companies, valued over $1B each, collectively had an initial valuation of around $200B, bringing the total, including OpenAI, to $500B. Fast forward to August, this figure surged to over $400B, with OpenAI’s valuation nearing $1T. Notably, Anthropic aims for a valuation of $350B after securing substantial investments from Microsoft and NVIDIA. Similarly, xAI raised $20B, possibly pushing its valuation to about $235B. Meanwhile, Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence retains a $32B valuation, while other startups like Thinking Machines and Perplexity are on the rise, with combined valuations exceeding $730B. Adding OpenAI’s current target of $830B brings this ecosystem’s total above $1.5T, closely approaching Meta’s market cap, illustrating the explosive growth of AI startups.
