The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools among tech-savvy youth is transforming the higher education landscape, particularly in the UK. UCAS, the centralized undergraduate admissions service, conducted a study revealing that nearly 48% of prospective university applicants utilize AI as a research tool. Most respondents leveraged AI for comparing universities (61%), exploring subjects (59%), and checking entry requirements (52%). However, university websites remain the primary resource for 43% of students, emphasizing the enduring importance of official sources.

Despite AI’s convenience, trust remains a significant issue, with 73% of respondents encountering inaccuracies in AI-generated information. Real-world experiences, such as campus visits, significantly impact applicants’ decisions, as 48% would reject a university after a negative open day. Thus, while AI enhances research efficiency, it cannot replace the value of personal guidance from parents and educators. UCAS will continue to monitor evolving attitudes towards AI in admissions.
