In April 2025, our AI agents began using their own syntax to navigate content, indicating a need for tools that mimic file system navigation. Initially viewed as a bug, their attempts highlighted a gap in our semantic search capabilities. Agents needed a way to directly reference files or resources instead of relying on meaning alone when searching. We developed a synthetic filesystem to enable consistent navigation across disparate platforms—transforming channels in Slack to directories, Notion pages to folders, and Google Drive documents accordingly. This included implementing Unix-inspired commands to facilitate operations like listing files, searching by name, and reading content in manageable chunks without exceeding context limits. The integration of these navigation tools with semantic search allows agents to explore information hierarchically while conducting precise searches. This synthesis enhances agents’ ability to understand organizational structures, moving them closer to functioning as comprehensive knowledge workers. The “Advanced Search” feature is now available for users.
