Google has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to streamline online shopping through AI agents. This new framework standardizes interactions between AI agents, retailers, and payment providers like Shopify, Walmart, and Visa, enabling seamless product searches, checkouts, and payments. Initially, UCP will function within Google Search AI Mode and the Gemini app, utilizing Google Pay and Google Wallet for efficient purchasing. Google aims to enhance user experience by allowing AI agents to manage shopping processes with a single command, simplifying a traditionally cumbersome workflow. Key partnerships with major brands such as Etsy, Target, and Mastercard will bolster UCP’s adoption. Businesses can also utilize new features like Business Agents, which act as virtual sales assistants, and Direct Offers, promoting exclusive deals to ready-to-purchase shoppers. This initiative signals a shift towards AI-led shopping experiences, making transactions simpler and faster for consumers.
