Transforming Shopping: Google Gemini and Search Unveil Agentic Commerce Tools with Support from Flipkart, Wayfair, and Target

0
Google has outlined a series of new initiatives, claimed to reshape online shopping through what it calls agentic commerce, a model in which artificial intelligence systems can complete shopping-related tasks on behalf of users.

Google’s recent initiatives aim to transform online shopping through “agentic commerce,” where AI completes shopping tasks for users. A key aspect is the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard enabling seamless collaboration among AI agents, retailers, and payment systems throughout the shopping journey. This eliminates the need for individual integrations and supports retail across various categories. Initially, UCP will enhance checkout options on AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, allowing U.S. users to finalize purchases without visiting retailer websites, with payments processed via Google Pay. Furthermore, Google introduced the Business Agent tool, allowing brands to engage customers directly on Search, enhancing customer service and sales capabilities. Additional features, including new data attributes for conversational commerce and Direct Offers advertising, will provide exclusive discounts tailored to shoppers nearing purchase decisions. Overall, these updates focus on leveraging AI to improve the online shopping experience.
