Online travel companies are enhancing user experiences by integrating with ChatGPT, allowing travelers to access real-time inventory and pricing information through AI chat applications. Recently, OpenAI announced new apps on the ChatGPT platform, available to U.S. users via conversation or direct commands. Pilot partnerships include Booking.com and Expedia.com, with Tripadvisor launching its own app soon. These apps utilize the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for seamless access to external data.
Expedia Group’s vice president, Clayton Nelson, highlighted the innovation of dynamic travel insights within ChatGPT conversations, enabling users to find hotel options, flight details, and explore destinations interactively. While users can plan trips in ChatGPT, they must navigate to Expedia’s platform to finalize bookings. As GenAI-driven search grows, it shows a higher conversion rate to bookings, despite being a small portion of overall traffic. Tripadvisor aims to engage users by providing reviews and personalized recommendations directly within the ChatGPT environment, asserting the importance of being present where travelers seek guidance.
