On March 25, the Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity (CWCSEO) hosted the AI Awareness Webinar, “Bridging the Digital Divide: AI and Communities of Color.” The event united community leaders, policymakers, and educators to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) impacts education, economic opportunities, and technology access for communities of color. Dr. Linda Barry from UConn emphasized the importance of equity in AI’s design and implementation, warning that exclusion can exacerbate existing disparities. By focusing on educational innovation, career pipelines in AI, and community-driven solutions, panelists highlighted the intersection of AI, health equity, and systemic barriers. Dr. Barry reinforced the need for diverse voices in AI development, stating, “If we want AI to work for our communities, our communities have to be in the room.” CWCSEO’s initiatives aim to bridge the digital divide, enhancing equitable access to technology and information, crucial determinants of health and opportunity.
