The UK Government, supported by a $1 million Meta grant to the Alan Turing Institute, is initiating a 12-month Open-Source AI Fellowship aimed at attracting top AI engineers to enhance public services. These engineers will develop open-source AI tools designed to boost productivity and strengthen national security, with applications like language translation and efficient construction planning. The initiative aims to reduce taxpayer costs while unlocking £45 billion in productivity gains across the public sector. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the importance of practical AI solutions for government operations. Additionally, ‘Caddy,’ an open-sourced AI assistant for call centres, has shown remarkable results in improving response times and service quality. The government is also launching a new phase of the AI Knowledge Hub, featuring resources like a Prompt Library to optimize departmental AI usage. This fellowship opens doors for AI engineers interested in contributing to public sector advancements starting January 2026.
